joining me now is ryan grimm, washington bureau chief for the huffington post and molly bowl. thank you both for being here tonight. >> thanks for having me. >> thanks, reverend. >> ryan, what's behind all of these ridiculous attacks on secretary clinton? >> part of it is just to have a primal hatred that a lot of republicans still have for the clintons. we kind of forget that because she now, you know, is bathed in this glow of this 60 plus percent approval ratings. she's helped turn kind of the world's opinion around about the united states, you know, more than 50% of people want her to run for president and actually would support her for president according to a new poll. so you kind of forget just the deep, deep hatred that republicans had for both clintons back in the '90s. and, you know, what you also forget, clinton is not one to shy from a fight. this is silly to think that she didn't want to go to that hearing and go toe-to-toe with these guys who are accusing her of all kinds of conspiracy of covering up things related to benghazi. the clintons are happiest when they

joining me now, washington correspondent for news week and dana millbank, columnist for the washington post. thank you both for being here. >> hi, reverend. >> so the republicans have a blue ribbon panel. do you think they are ready to learn the lessons of this election? >> i think that you can disregard everything these guys said leading up to the election because they talk a good game and they have to have the, you know, bravado and whatnot. now, they really want to be back in power. and they've got to sit down and hammer out what's going to get them there. the problem is, the party can't decide. half of them think it's because mitt romney is too liberal and wasn't enough of a kind of d distinction from obama and half of them think he was just a lousy kacandidate for others reasons and maybe may should have gone with -- i don't know. jeb bush? part of the problem here is that the party itself can't decide what it wants to be. they have to solve this identity crisis on some level. >> now, you know, dana, bill crystal has a weekly stand in. very interestingly, he puts here that they're

what will you miss about washington? and what will you not miss? >> i will miss the chance to affect public policy. and i'll miss the friends there. other members of congress, and, by the way, one of the great bargains the american people get are the people who work for members of congress. we have a wonderful, intelligent, thoughtful, dedicated group of people. it's great to be able to come to worker day and interact with bright people. what i won't miss is one, the travel. and two, to be honest at this point, the sense of responsibility. for 45 years, i've been working in government, first in the city hall of boston and then the last 32 years in congress. i'm sorry people will still be doing those things, but i need a little rest. >> your proudest moment. what are you feeling is your proudest achievement? is it dodd-frank? >> well, that's one of them. one of them, frankly, has been the successes we've got on getting legal equality for lgbt people. and i've had a major repeal of don't ask, don't tell. and i was proud of my role in defeating the ef

according to "the washington post," i'm quoting them, he devours news from 2600 miles away in washington, shaking his head and wondering what if. yet friends insist romney is not bitter. erin, i'm just getting your react as somebody that covered him a lot. how do you read his new self-imposed seclusion? >> not surprising at all. this is a man who has just spent the last six years of his life running for president and towards the end of that campaign and john kerry was upset and al gore upset and mitt romney is just taking a breather and he may not have a big voice within the republican party and he might have a big voice on certain issues in the years to come. >> well, just as a point of information, i think al gore had a different view of the 2000 election but, anyway, let me go back to you, kristen. the gop's response to the election was all over the place but 25% of republicans want their state to succeecede. >> i don't think we're going to have a mass move of states. although i will agree with you, there are competing voices right now within the republican party about where do we go

that's about one week of spending in washington, d.c. the problem is we've got 51 weeks of over-spending. we can talk about raising taxes, but we've got to you grow the economy. if you raise taxes on small businesses, you raise taxes on farmers and ranchers in my district, that's going to cripple small businesses. i'm not worried about ge. they've got a seat at the table at the white house. i'm worried about the small guy that's going to get hammered that don't have a lesion of tax attorneys. so i believe we need a fundamental tax reform. i thif the president agrees with that, as well. >> if you're worried about the debt, and i think we have to deal with the debt, according to the congressional budget office, you'd pick up $950 billion over 10 years by just letting the tax cuts for the rich or those making over 250 a year go for 10 years, you have 9$950 billion covered right there. that's a huge step towards the deficit. >> when you have a trillion dollars of excess spending in one year, what are we going to do for the other nine years?

i'm live from washington, d.c. tonight's lead, the end of an era. for more than 20 years republicans have calmed to the one policy that's crippled our ability to get things done in washington. do you remember this? >> read my lips. no new taxes. >> read my lips, no new taxes. george h.w. bush hammered that mantra to win the white house in 1988. but just two years later, the reagan deficits were skyrocketing and president bush was forced to change his most famous line. >> long and bitter battle over the budget officially ended last night. president bush put his signature on the deficit reduction package, including $140 billion in tax increases. >> tax increases. that was a turning point for the modern republican party. the right wing went crazy. and george bush lost re-election. since then the party's been committed to never compromising on the tax issue, no matter the deficit. no congressional republican has voted for an increase in taxes since 1990. think about it. for nearly a quarter of a century, no new income taxes. in the current congress, 236
